Layering punch

When I first saw this picture, I thought this was a wonderful idea for parties. This concoction has three things: cranberry juice, blue Gatorade and seven up.

The look is achieved by following two elementary rules.

Rule one: juice with more sugar will be denser and should be on the bottom. Juice with less sugar, and more bubbles should be on top.

Rule two: pour slowly. The look is achieved simply by slowly pouring the blue Gatorade ontop of the cranberry juice. Pour the Gatorade onto a spoon to prevent it from pouring deep into the cranberry juice. The ice floats because it has some air in it. It made me wonder whether or not we could do this with other juices.

Place ice cubes in the bottom 3rd of glass. Pour the cranberry juice or fruit punch in to fill the bottom 3rd. Place a few more cubes into the middle and pour in the blue Gatorade to fill the glass 2/3 full. Place the final 3rd of ice in the glass. Pour in the diet 7up or diet Sprite. Your guests will love it!

No matter what layered drink you decide to make, you must always remember the density of each layer. The densest liquid must go on bottom.

First add in your ice. Pour the first layer. Then get out the spoon and gently pour the next layer over the back of the spoon to diffuse its impact on the layer below.

The layered cocktail is a masterpiece of French mixology.

Ingredients
  • 1. CuraƧao
  • 2. Kirschwasser
  • 3. Benedictine
Method

  1. Layer ingredients, one on top of the other with Benedictine at the bottom, then in order, upwards, in a pony glass.
  1. Use the back of a spoon and pour the liqueurs very slowly to avoid mixing.
